Tall Ships Sporting Champions
The second day at the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta saw a thrilling mix of activity both on and off the water. With prizes at stake for inter crew sporting events including dragon boat racing, tug of war and beach volley ball, plus special prizes for individual crews taking part in the crew parade, visitors to Falmouth were treated to blue skies and an action packed programme of events.
Overall the Mexican ship’s crew from the Cuauhtemoc led the field on the sporting front to win both the Dragon Boat Racing and the football. They were followed closely by the Shabab Oman crew who excelled on Gyllyngvase Beach to take both first and second places in the Beach Volleyball. The Russian crew from the Mir also demonstrated that their skills extend further than just the water by taking first place in the Tug of War.
The crew parade also produced some well earned prizes for individual crews with the Mexican Cuauhtemoc taking the prize for the Best Ship. The prize for the farthest travelled ship was awarded to the Uruguayan Captain Miranda and British ships Challenger 1 & 4 won the prize for making the most contribution to Falmouth during their stay.
