The Tall Ships Unsung Heroes!
A Falmouth man who sailed to America on a replica of the famous Mayflower over 50 years ago has rekindled his love of the magnificent Tall Ships at this years Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta in the town this week.
Despite restricted mobility, 78 year old Mike Ford from Constantine has been helping the event as one of the 130 volunteers who are acting as Tall Ships ambassadors. Key to finding Mike a role has been the Cornwall Centre for Volunteers who are co-ordinating the volunteers roles.
Speaking to the Tall Ships Press Office Mike spoke fondly of his 54 days aboard the Mayflower delivering cargo from Plymouth Devon to Plymouth Massachusetts following in the wake of the Pilgrim Fathers – “it was the journey of a lifetime and since then I have had a passion for the worlds Tall Ships - not just because of their amazing grace and beauty but also because of the important role they play in offering young people the fantastic opportunity to learn to sail."
Mike adds, "My time spent with the Mayflower ll will stay in my memories forever. She was a beautiful ship which despite her age could easily withstand Force 8 gales. Being involved with this year's Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta not only brings back fond memories but gives me the opportunity to share my enthusiasm of these extraordinary sailing vessels with visitors to this year's event." |
