Tall Ships in Falmouth prove huge visitor hit!

The Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta in Falmouth kicked off in spectacular style today with a staggering 13,000 people visiting the magnificent ships. The first day total puts this weeks Festival on a par with other Tall Ship events around the world and bodes well for the rest of the week.

Unsurprisingly, Cuauhtemoc, the largest ship visiting Falmouth for the regatta proved the most popular, welcoming a steady stream of visitors eager to meet the dashing Mexican crew.

Commenting on the days attendance, Chairman of the event Bernard Heppener said “We couldn’t have asked for a better first day to the Regatta. The sun has shone for us and the crowds have come creating an exciting festival atmosphere. Falmouth has proved itself to be a fantastic venue and the well-travelled crew of the Tall Ships are thrilled to be in such a spectacular location.”

The expected traffic chaos didn’t emerge with visiting the ships by boat the most popular way get here. Inspector John Trott from Devon and Cornwall Police is pleased with the way things have gone, “Park and float and ferry access to the ships has been the star of the show and helped relieve any traffic problems. Visitors are reminded that if arriving by car please park sensibly and considerately.”

The Festival organiser Sam Groom, Tourism Officer for Carrick District Council is equally delighted at the first days events “Its great to see the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta get off to such buoyant start but the action has only just begun with three more days for visitors to join in the festivities.”

The Funchall 500 Tall Ships Regatta in Falmouth kicks off on Thursday 11th September with crews of the Challenger 1 vessel climbing the 150’ foot masts of the Cuauhtemoc in a unique tall ships challenge at 10.am. On the water there will be inter crew dragon boat racing, a fast and furious event visible from the town quays.

In the afternoon crew sports are being held on Gyllygnvase Beach and the SHIPS PARADE, an event not to be missed, kicks off at 4.30pm. Naval Dress and fancy dress mix together in this fun parade through the town and everyone is welcome. Winners from the days events will then attend the prize giving in Events Square before heading off for the inter ship crew party.
