Local Companies Sign up to Support Army of Volunteers Behind Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta in Falmouth

An army marches on its stomach, or so the saying goes and the army of volunteers and supporters of the Tall Ships event is no exception. Cornish companies Pure Blue Water, West Country Fruit and W C Rowe have come on board to supply water, fruit and pasties to sustain the many volunteers, students and Liaison Officers in Falmouth who have freely given their time to make the event a success.

Pure Blue Water, based in Falmouth, searched Europe for a perfectly balanced natural spring water. The exceptional pure water they use rises at a protected spring in a lush green valley of outstanding natural beauty in Cornwall where it is bottled at source.

Pure Blue bottles are fully re-cyclable and the company offers all trade customers a free pick-up & re-cycling service. The company reinforces its ethical ethos by being a carbon neutral company and founding Company Partner & Platinum Sponsor of the Marine Conservation Society, and sponsor of Surfers Against Sewage. At least 10% of company profits each year is donated to keep the oceans, seas and coastlines fit for life, ensuring the water and natural water sports are safeguarded and treasured for the next generation to enjoy as tens of thousands of people do each year.

“The Tall Ships event fits perfectly with the young, active, environmental message behind Pure Blue Water and our support of naturally powered watersports throughout the South West. We are delighted to be involved with an event so local to us and to keep all the sailors and volunteers hydrated’ says Richard Lawrie, Managing Director, Pure Blue Water.

Skinners Brewery satellite bars at the Regatta Shopping Village at Church Street Car Park, Custom House Quay, Events Square and in the Docks will also be selling Pure Blue Water and will re-cycle the bottles throughout the event.

“We have been amazed by the generosity and support of local companies, sponsors and partners” said John Hick, Chairman of the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta, Falmouth “with the significant support from the business community we are looking forward to making this prestigious Regatta an outstanding event for the whole of Cornwall”.

West Country Fruit Sales (incorporating The Essential Food Company) has also agreed to supply fruit to the hungry volunteers, the company regularly supports community initiatives by donating fruit and produce to local events. The company’s roots as a fresh produce wholesaler in Cornwall go back as far as 1856, making Westcountry Fruit Sales one of the oldest produce trading businesses in the region, and the UK. Members of the same family have owned and operated the company since 1961, providing a consistent approach to delivering excellent produce to customers. Today West Country Fruit is one of the largest private food service supply chain businesses in the South West of England. Based in Falmouth, the company delivers wholesale food products to the catering trade throughout Cornwall and South West Devon from its two depots in Falmouth and St Austell.

Sean Williams, Managing Director of Westcountry Fruit Ltd states “The company is delighted to be contributing to the successful staging of the Tall Ships visit to Falmouth this year. It seems particularly appropriate for us to be supporting this important event given that as a business we can trace our company's involvement in the supply of wholesale food and provisions to the maritime trade in Falmouth as far back as 1856. We are of course very proud to be associated with such an important and high profile event and in particular would like to praise the efforts of the organisers for their success in bringing another exciting Tall Ships event to Falmouth."

W C Rowe, the famous Falmouth based bakery was founded in Swanpool Street in 1949. The company has gone from strength to strength and now has shops the length and breadth of Cornwall. Rowe’s has recently been awarded Supplier of the Year by the supermarket chain Asda, who they have been supplying for 15 years locally and regionally with their produce ranging from Saffron Buns and Cream Teas, and nationally with their savoury range including their famous pasties. Rowe’s have generously offered vouchers for the Regatta volunteers to use at any one of their shops in Falmouth or at their stand in the Docks event area.

“Rowe’s are delighted to be involved in and support such a prestigious event” comments Paul Pearce, spokesperson for Rowe’s “ I can remember ten years ago when the Tall Ships last came to Falmouth, how fantastic it was for all involved, albeit exhausting! Hopefully we can help feed the masses, keep those energy levels up and make the 2008 event even bigger and more successful”.
