‘All Aboard for Tall Ships!’
On Friday 22nd August Falmouth’s official souvenir programme for the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta was launched. The full colour 46 page programme is packed full of information on the activities, exhibitions and entertainment taking place, along with a full directory of all the Tall Ships visiting the port from 10th-13th September. The programme costs £2.00 and is available in advance from Falmouth Tourist Information Centre or the National Maritime Museum Cornwall and from Regatta sites during the event.
At the launch, internationally acclaimed local artist John Dyer, whose painting ‘Tall Ships and Small Ships ’08’ decorates the front cover of the programme, took the opportunity to launch his on-line auction. The auction features two Tall Ship paintings donated by John Dyer to help raise funds towards the costs of local school children taking part in the race. The paintings will go to auction on eBay from the 22nd August for 10 days. To view or take part in the auction you can either log onto www.johndyergallery.co.uk/ebay or visit the official website for the event www.falmouthtallships.co.uk and follow the links.
In addition to all of the above, John has also created a Tall Ships children’s painting competition. The Tall Ships Art Competition theme is "Tall Ships and Small Ships" and is open to all children across the UK, with a maximum age limit of 16. Pictures should be sent to art@johndyergallery.co.uk or, if you don’t have access to the internet entries can be dropped in to Falmouth Tourist Information Centre, Prince of Wales Pier, Falmouth TR11 3DF. The closing date for entries is 6th September; all entries will be displayed on the gallery website www.johndyergallery.co.uk. Judging will take place on 7th September and the entries can be viewed at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall from 8th September, throughout the Regatta. Judges will include Milly Newman from the NMMC and Brian Stewart from Falmouth Art Gallery. Prizes include family membership of the NMMC.
"It is an absolute delight to be involved with the Tall Ships Regatta and to have an opportunity to encourage children to interpret the event in their own way” said John Dyer. “The colours, life and energy that can be found on the coast are always inspiring, but when it is all combined with a festival you get something that is totally unique. I am sure that the children's paintings will be fantastic, children have a way of capturing the essence of a subject that I have always admired
and it will be a wonderful opportunity for everybody to be able to see all the results on our new online gallery and also the prints of their work proudly strung up across the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth for everyone to admire. I can't wait!"
The John Dyer Gallery is publishing a limited edition signed print of the ‘Tall Ships and Small Ships 08’ painting. The prints cost £95 and are available to purchase in advance from Falmouth Tourist Information Centre and from all the information points during the event and also on-line at www.johndyergallery.co.uk
