Tall Ships and Small Ships

Internationally acclaimed local artist John Dyer is supporting the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta. His support ranges from donating two Tall Ship paintings to be auctioned on-line to raise funds towards the costs of local school children taking part in the race; a Tall Ships children’s painting competition and the production of a magnificent Tall Ships painting that will be used on the front cover of the official Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta Souvenir Programme.

John Dyer’s painting of the Tall Ships is bursting with the energy and colour that the Regatta will bring to Falmouth. Seagulls fly through the sky; sailors line the rigging; tall ships, small ships and ferries fill the harbour; everyone is having a thoroughly good time! The painting is a prime example of the vibrancy and energy John captures in his paintings that make them famous around the World.

The John Dyer Gallery are publishing a limited edition signed print of the Tall Ships painting. Prints are available to purchase in advance from Falmouth Tourist Information Centre and from all the information points during the event and also on-line at www.johndyergallery.co.uk.

The Tall Ships Art Competition theme is "Tall Ships and Small Ships" and is open to all children across the UK, with a maximum age limit of 16. Pictures should be sent to art@johndyergallery.co.uk or, if you don’t have access to the internet entries can be dropped in to Falmouth Tourist Information Centre on Prince of Wales Pier. The closing date for entries is 6th September; all entries will be displayed on the gallery website www.johndyergallery.co.uk. Judging will take place on 7th September and the entries can be viewed in the café at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall from 8th September, throughout the Regatta.

"It is an absolute delight to be involved with the Tall Ships Regatta and to have an opportunity to encourage children to interpret the event in their own way” said John Dyer. “The colours, life and energy that can be found on the coast are always inspiring, but when it is all combined with a festival you get something that is totally unique. I am sure that the children's paintings will be fantastic, children have a way of capturing the essence of a subject that I have always admired and it will be a wonderful opportunity for everybody to be able to see all the results on our new online gallery and also the prints of their work proudly strung up across the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth for everyone to admire. I can't wait!"

The organising committee for activities in Falmouth have been working hard to make sure local children are able to take part in the Regatta. John Dyer has produced two special Tall Ships paintings that will go to auction on eBay from the 22nd August for 10 days. Volunteer for Falmouth Tall Ships Association Sarah Newton said “It is marvellous that John has painted and donated two such exciting paintings that capture the spirit of the event. The funds we hope to raise from the auction of these paintings will make a major contribution towards the cost of sending the local youngsters from Falmouth & Penryn Schools on the TS Pelican to Portugal. I am sure they will have the experience of a lifetime and this couldn't have been achieved without the generosity of local people and organisations”. To view or take part in the auction you can either log onto the John Dyer website www.johndyergallery.co.uk or visit the official website for the event www.falmouthtallships.co.uk and follow the links.

Samantha Groom, Tourism Officer for Carrick District Council commented “We are so pleased to be working with John Dyer and we are grateful for his support. His enthusiasm and creative flair has added enormously to the event and to be able to use his Tall Ships painting on the front cover of the programme makes it a wonderful souvenir to keep for many years”.
