South West Water Sponsors Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta in Falmouth

South West Water is the latest sponsor to pledge support for the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta taking place in Falmouth from 10th to 13th September this year.

To mark the near-completion of its £2 billion Clean Sweep programme, which has helped underpin the region’s economic growth and protect its environment, South West Water is sponsoring the Regatta and offering five youngsters a trip aboard a tall ship in a special competition this summer.

“We are very pleased to be sponsoring the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta in Falmouth and we thought offering youngsters an adventure of a lifetime on board a Tall Ship was the perfect way of celebrating the impact, the £2billion Clean Sweep programme has had on the quality of our bathing water around the region" - Chris Loughlin, Chief Executive.

The company will be promoting water conservation and re-cycling at the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta. They will also have fun and informative displays and quizzes for visitors to the Regatta to take part in.

“We are delighted to welcome South West Water on board, without sponsorship from the business community the event would not be possible. We look forward to working with all of our sponsors and turning the start of this prestigious Regatta into an outstanding event for the whole of Cornwall”. John Hick, Chairman of the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Organising Committee commented.

South West Water’s competition offers five youngsters the adventure of a lifetime on a magnificent Tall Ship. Competition winners will spend a week on board the TS Pelican learning how to sail a Tall Ship as she takes part in the first leg of the Regatta to Portugal. Winners will then be flown back to the UK from Porto.

To enter the competition for one of the coveted places being funded by South West Water, residents between the ages of 16 and 25, living in the company’s service area need to answer a multiple choice question, competitors can enter online at www.southwestwater.co.uk/tallships. Details of the competition are also being distributed to customers via schools, colleges, youth service and libraries and there will also be print advertising.

Competition winners will take part in the Regatta onboard the Tall Ship Pelican, a British Tall Ship. The ship is fast and this will be her first season racing, which will add to the excitement of all sailing on her. She is a three-masted, steel-hulled barquentine, built in 1948, nearly thirty five metres in length, with a black hull and white stripe just below deck level. Once on board, they will become members of the crew and experience every aspect of ships life, from keeping watch, to climbing the rigging, hauling up sails, helping in the galley and keeping the vessel ‘ship shape’.

Sarah Newton, volunteer for Falmouth Tall Ships Association comments “I am delighted that five more youngsters from the South West will be sponsored to join the 13 local youngsters who have been sponsored by FTSA, A&P Falmouth and the Rotary Club of Helston (Lizard). I am sure the winners of the competition will have the voyage of a lifetime aboard the TS Pelican”.
