Volunteer Stewards Needed
As Falmouth gears up for the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta, Cornwall Centre for Volunteers will be leading the way in recruiting volunteers for this fantastic event taking place from 10th to 13th September this year.
Help is needed in the form of stewarding as thousands of people are expected to visit Falmouth during the four days the Tall Ships are in port. Up to ten of the larger Tall Ships from around the world will be berthed in the Docks and are welcoming visitors on board. A further eight smaller vessels can also be seen at Port Pendennis Marina.
Volunteers are needed to help steward in both the Docks and the Marina area helping everyone to get the most out of their visit. In addition to this, the disabled car park and coach park need stewards who can direct drivers into car park spaces.
Emily Evans, Sports and Cultural Volunteering Coordinator with Cornwall Centre for Volunteers said “The event is going to be amazing and stewarding is a really great opportunity to get involved and be part of it all.” She added “The opportunities that we have for volunteers will be right at the heart of the event, helping to direct the visitors when they arrive and providing information on the Tall Ships. We are looking for friendly enthusiastic people who would love to be part of a team for this event”, said Emily.
Most of the stewarding opportunities run from Wednesday 10th to Friday 12th September. Each shift is just a few hours long enabling people to volunteer for a one-off shift or on each day of the Regatta. Volunteers will get plenty of time to take part in the event and soak up the atmosphere. During the event Falmouth will host a range of maritime exhibitions, live music, children’s activities, street theatre, markets, onboard visits to Tall Ships and a firework display. The four days of events will then culminate in the start of a two leg race. The Tall Ships will race from Falmouth to Ilhavo, Portugal and then onto Madeira, celebrating the 500th anniversary of the founding of Funchal.
There will be two briefing sessions volunteers need to attend. The first will be held on Saturday 26th July 10.00 am – 12.30 pm, where you can find out more about the Funchal 500 Tall Ships activities taking place in Falmouth and the volunteer roles. A further, more detailed session will take place on Friday 29th August from 6.00 – 8.00 pm. Both briefings will take place at the National Maritime Museum Cornwall.
