“Tall Ships Challenge” Lucky Winners!
Falmouth and Penryn Community Colleges have been working together over the past school year on a competition known as the “Tall Ships Challenge”. The lucky winners will have the opportunity to take part in the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta, leaving Falmouth on the 13th of September sailing on T.S. Pelican to Illhavo in Portugal.
Applications were invited from youngsters aged 16 by September, and 24 youngsters applied. They were asked to say what they hoped to achieve from taking part in the “Tall Ships Challenge” and teachers Mr Alan Hulbert and Mr Mike Sawden devised a series of land and sea based challenges which included a raft building project at Swanpool Beach as well as a day out on the local Tall Ship Hardiesse and finally, each pupil had an interview. For the raft building they were very generously helped by Danny Duncan of Elemental UK Watersports Centre at Swanpool Beach.
The eleven winners are announced as follows:
Falmouth School
Daniel Quick, Josh Redgrave, Curtis Bell, Samantha Heard, Jacob Telling and James Maltby
Penryn School
Josh Davis, Steffani Harris, Jamie Pikesley, James Ross and Kernow Bascombe
Sarah Newton, a volunteer for Falmouth Tall Ships Association, initiated the competition and has been responsible for raising the funds to send the youngsters. Sarah commented; ”All of the youngsters who took part in the “Tall Ships Challenge” had fun and felt that they had learned a lot about themselves, had gained self confidence and an awareness of team skills. I am sure the lucky youngsters who have been selected will have a trip of a life-time.” She added "At the beginning of the Tall Ships Challenge we planned on enabling four youngsters to take part in the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta and we were all absolutely thrilled when A&P stepped in with funding to help an additional six. A&P have made such a huge contribution to the success of the event in many ways and now they will make it truly memorable for these lucky young people."
Chairman of the Funchal 500 Regatta in Falmouth, Mr John Hick added; “I want to thank all those who have worked so hard to make the “Tall Ships Challenge” such a success. The teachers all worked outside school hours to make the Challenge a worthwhile and fun activity. It will be great to wave local youngsters over the start-line in Falmouth Bay on September 13th and I am looking forward to hearing of their adventures.”
The final challenge for the winners, after they have finished their school exams is to raise £100.00 each through sponsored activities.
