The Dream Ticket?
Ever dreamed of sailing on a magnificent tall ship bound for warmer countries? Around thirty such ships will be in Falmouth from 10th to 13th September for the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta, they will race from Falmouth to Ilhavo in Portugal, then on to Funchal in Madeira.
The Rotary Club of Helston Lizard have funding to assist a young person, aged 16 to 24 from the Helston, Lizard or Mullion area to live their dream of taking part in the Regatta, sailing on the first leg of the race. This could be a once in a lifetime opportunity to become one of the crew and to try out the whole range of activities involved in sailing the ship and life on board.
Ian Munday, a member of the Helston Lizard Club and the Chief Liaison Officer for the Funchal 500 Tall Ship Regatta in Falmouth said; “To sail on a tall ship is often a truly life changing experience for a young person. As part of our programme of support and development for young people in our area we are delighted to be able to use some of our charity fund to help a deserving local young person secure a berth on a ship. We would hope that other local Rotary clubs will follow our lead and also offer some support to their local youngsters”.
The Rotary Club are particularly interested in hearing from young people who have been caring for a relative, making a contribution to the community or supporting a good cause. If this sounds like you, or someone you know, application forms are available from Tim Bowerbank at Cornwall Marine Network on 01326 211382.
If you would like to part in the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta but do not meet the criteria which the Rotary Club have set, full details of the event can be found on the Falmouth website www.falmouthtallships.co.uk, including details of the ships taking part, background to the Regatta and the programme ashore. A berth for the first leg of the race from Falmouth to Ilhavo in Portugal could cost as little as £560, including return flight from Portugal back to Newquay, via Gatwick.
