Ten Thousand pound boost for Tall Ships Regatta

Next year's tall ships regatta will benefit from a £10,000 boost from the Falmouth Tall Ships Association.

In 2008 Falmouth will host the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta, where up to 30 square rigged vessels will visit the port before the start of the race on 13th September.

It is also hoped that the 2008 Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta will create prosperity for Falmouth along the lines of the 1998 tall ships race, which contributed £24 million to the local economy.

The Falmouth Tall Ships Association, formed seven years ago, were instrumental in securing the regatta to Falmouth. The association announced their sponsorship support aboard the Tall Ships Youth Trust tall ship, Stavros S Niarchos, as she visited Falmouth last week.

The association brings tall ships, their sailing crews and vessels to Falmouth, helping to promote life-changing seagoing adventures, where cadets and members of the public learn about these amazing historic vessels, experiencing them first hand.

John Hick, chairman of both the Falmouth Tall Ships Association and the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta, explained, "The association is delighted to be able to provide sponsorship for next year's event.

"It's thanks to the fundraising efforts of our nine committee members, and the association's 90 friends, that we can donate this amount to help next year's Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta."

Samantha Groom, Tourism Officer for Carrick District Council and organiser of the event said “We are delighted to have this support from Falmouth Tall Ships Association and in turn we hope that the event assists in raising the profile of this important association, which for years has been instrumental in bringing tall ships to Falmouth.”
