Media Sponsor Announced for Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta 2008

The Packet Newspaper Group is to be the media sponsor for the prestigious Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta which leaves Falmouth in a race to Ilhavo and then on to Funchal in Madeira in September next year. The newspaper company has agreed to produce the official event programme and will run weekly articles in The Packets running up to the event.

Packet Newspapers publisher Simon Dixon-Phillip said: ‘We are delighted to be involved in this important maritime event and are looking forward to working with the organisers and sponsors to make the regatta a success. It’s a fantastic opportunity to amplify the qualities of the area and local businesses to a world-wide audience.”

The company has a number of exciting ideas to promote the event to a wide readership, and will link into a number of websites and publications through their parent company Newsquest Cornwall, which will help generate extensive promotion for the event.

The Falmouth Packet has a long association with covering the town’s maritime heritage, including the relationship between Falmouth and the Tall Ships, and of course the importance of the Packet Ships to the port. These themes will be picked up again by the newspaper group as the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta approaches; they will become a source of interest and information for its readers and potential visitors to the event. The Packet is also seeking pictures from past Tall Ships events in Falmouth which will be published in the run up to the Regatta.

Samantha Groom, Tourism Officer for Carrick District Council and event organiser in Falmouth quoted; “This is an exciting collaboration, we welcome the opportunity to work with The Packet Newspaper Group, and in particular their enthusiasm and commitment towards the event”.

John Hick, Chairman of the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta Falmouth added; “We are very pleased to welcome The Packet Newspapers on board again as supporters of this major event and fully appreciate the tradition of this local newspaper supporting Tall Ships”.
