From 10th - 13th September 2008 Falmouth will be the host port for the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta. The Regatta is organised by Sail Training International and is the centrepiece of year-long celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the first settlement on the Portuguese island of Madeira.
A fleet of some 25 Tall Ships will gather (10 - 13 September) in Falmouth before racing to Ilhavo, Portugal (20 - 23 September) for more celebrations. On 23rd September they race once again to Funchal, Madeira for a Maritime Festival and major celebrations in the city (2 - 5 October). For full information visit the Funchal 500 website.
The large square-rigged vessels will be berthed at Queen’s Wharf in Falmouth Docks and are open to the public from Wednesday 10th September to Friday 12th September. Entry is free and access is either through the main gate on Bar Road or by ferry. The smaller ships will be located at Port Pendennis Marina with viewing points from the Maritime Museum walkway or Events Square. For details of Tall Ships taking part click here.
The Parade of Sail and Race Start takes place on Saturday 13th September 2008. Vessels will start to undock from 1pm and will parade past St Mawes, St Anthony Lighthouse, then turning right to proceed past Pendennis, Falmouth’s beaches to Rosemullion and the mouth of the Helford River. The ships will then disperse to the start line, a few miles out in the Bay, marked by HMS Cattistock and Coastguard Cutter Anglian Princess. The race start is planned for 5pm. To celebrate the transformation of the region’s bathing waters, South West Water is offering five 16 to 25 year olds the adventure of a lifetime on TS Pelican, in the first leg of the Regatta. For further details and to enter the competition, click here.
An exciting programme of events has been planned throughout the town during the four days of the Regatta.
