Kaliakra
Kaliakra was built at the Gdansk Shipyard, Poland in 1984 and is owned by Navigation Maritime Bulgare.
The general perception is that Kaliakra is a reproduction of a ship of the same name from the time before World War I. In fact, she is one of the three ultra-modern sister ships, designed for training. Now she is used for training the Naval Cadets from Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy in Varna, Bulgaria.
The ship has participated on many occasions in the world-famous Cutty Sark Tall Ships regatta organized by the International Sailing Training Association (ISTA). The many highly placed results and the international popularity she has gained have raised the prestige of the Bulgarian national flag.
During the Columbus Race 1992, dedicated to the 500 years anniversary from discovery of America, Kaliakra has sailed twice across the Atlantic Sea and finished third among 143 ships.
A great number of visitors, members of royal families, head of states, government officials and celebrities have been guests on board Kaliakra.
The ship is perhaps named after the legend of the girl Kaliakra, who jumped together with 40 friends from the rocks of Cape Kaliakra, as she preferred death to living in a Turkish harem.
