Alexander von Humboldt

Alexander von Humboldt is easily recognised by her emerald green sails. The ship was built in 1906 as a trading vessel, but served for many years as a light ship off the German coast. Due to the strong construction of the hull, light ships are very suited to conversion into sailing ships

After being bought by the Sail Training Association of Germany, the Kiel, as she was then called, suffered damage by being rammed by a drifting 20,000 ton bulk carrier, but after repairs she was converted to a three masted barque, and renamed Alexander von Humboldt.

The ship is named after the German statesman von Humboldt, who became well-known as a naturalist and explorer, and who was the joint founder of Berlin University. He studied Central and South America.

Since her relaunch in 1988, the ship Alexander von Humboldt has made many Atlantic crossings, and has covered more than 300,000 nautical miles.
