Education Projects
The university and colleges in Cornwall are making the most of the visiting Tall Ships, using the event and the experiences offered as a valuable educational tool. Listed below are details of the various projects taking place.
The Tall Ships’ Diaries
University College Falmouth’s journalism students are researching, writing and publishing a magazine called ‘The Tall Ships’ Diaries’. Some of the students will join the Regatta as trainees to report on the race first hand. A website will include daily blogs, photo’s and video clips. So, if you want to find out what it is like to participate in a Tall Ship’s race, visit their website. We’ll create a link from here once it goes live.

Catalyst Business Interchange
A national pilot project called Catalyst Business Interchange, which gives teachers the opportunity to access business placements, will result in students from Cornwall College gaining some real work experience at the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta at Falmouth in September.
Cornwall College Lecturer Suzette Sadler will spend three days in April working with Carrick District Council's Tourism Officer, Sam Groom, to update her knowledge of all aspects of event management. Staff from the tourism service will pay a reciprocal visit to the college in June to work with the students and provide training so that they can steward at the Regatta.
More information about the Catalyst Business Interchange can be found at www.takeeducationfurther.org.
Schools Extended Story-telling Project
A series of storytelling workshops have been developed for schools in Falmouth, to actively link the wealth of stories and history behind the Tall Ships to a live project for pupils, during the ships’ visit to the port.
Theatre practitioners have worked with school children from year 3 to year 8 at St Francis, Marlborough, Falmouth Primary, King Charles, St Mary’s and Falmouth Community School, to inspire children to collect or create stories around a theme of travel, migration and the sea. The final stage of the project will be the creation of a book of the children’s work, and a series of live storytelling sessions by the children on board the ships in Falmouth Docks. Groups will be ‘storming’ the ships led onboard by the infamous swashbuckling pirate Pirate ‘Captain Jack Sparrow’. Catch their stories on 10th and 11th September or buy the book £3) from Falmouth Tourist Information Centre or the Maritime Museum.
The project was co-ordinated by John Frankland, Performing Arts Consultant, with funding through the Extended Schools Programme.
Tourism Experience
Hollis Opie and Clair Taylor, students studying Cornwall College's Foundation Degree in Tourism, will be managing the Tall Ships Information Point being located at Events Square during the four day event. The project is the focus of their work based learning module and gives the students first hand experience in planning and managing a professional project within such a large scale event. ''It's a really great opportunity we've been given to work with Carrick and its exciting being part of the Funchal 500 event'' commented Clair. Tall Ships Challenge
Falmouth and Penryn Community Colleges have been working together over the past school year on a competition know as the 'Tall Ships Challenge'. The competition involved a series of land and sea based challenges for the youngsters to compete in. The 13 lucky winners have been granted the opportunity of a lifetime as they take part in the race, sailing from Falmouth to Ilhavo when the ships leave on Saturday 13 September. Fundraising activities for the children include sponsored walks, auctioned paintings and financial support from a variety of local businesses and individuals. The final challenge for the winners is to raise £100 each through sponsored activities.
Arts for Health
A creative arts project has been completed linking young and old in a collaborative arts initiative, resulting in a series of imaginative flags which have been installed throughout Falmouth town centre. The maritime themed flags add colour and movement throughout the town centre.
Truro & Penwith College Students
Students studying the Community Sports Leader and the Sports Leader Awards are assisting Carrick Leisure Ltd staff during the inter-ship sports day on Thursday 11 September. They will assist with the shoreside organisation of the Dragon Boat Racing and time keeping and administration for beach volleyball, tug of war, tennis and climbing at Gyllyngvase.
