Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World [12a]
10 September 2008. 5.45pm
The Poly, 24 Church Street, Falmouth
A rare chance to catch Peter Weir’s masterly drama on the big screen where it belongs. This is the definitive sea-faring movie, garnering Oscars for cinematography and sound, while nominated in most of the other categories. It’s 1805, and ships surgeon Stephen Maturin and Navy Captain Jack Aubrey (Bettany and Crowe) set sail to see the newness and strangeness of life on the far side of the world, against the backdrop of the Napoleonic wars. Everything you would expect from a high seas adventure is present and the attention to detail is stunning: thrilling battles, threatening weather conditions, bravery, treachery and a wonderfully real atmosphere where you can practically taste and smell the saltwater.
Dir: Peter Weir US / 2003 / 2hr 18min
Cast: Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany, James D’Arcy

Deep Water [PG]
13 September 2008. 6pm
The Poly, 24 Church Street, Falmouth
Deep Water, a remarkable and bizarre story told in the gripping docudrama style of Touching the Void, unravels the attempt by Donald Crowhurst, an electronics inventor, to win the 1968 Golden Globe Race, designed to encourage the first round the world, non-stop, single-handed voyage. As an amateur, Crowhurst found himself in trouble within hours, and faced a terrible dilemma. His solution was to break radio contact and bide his time off the coast of Argentina, planning to join his competitors on the home stretch as if he had made the whole voyage. This compelling study of ego, ambition and ultimately madness interweaves contemporary interviews with archive footage plus Crowhurst’s own onboard audio and visual recordings of his doomed voyage.
