Falmouth, First & Last | NMMC
Discover a new exhibition at the Maritime Museum which celebrates Falmouth’s history – from 1688 to today.
Did you know that Falmouth was the communication hub of the world?
Today we can make contact at the touch of a button but a few hundred years ago you could wait months for news.
By the end of the 1600s, rapid expansion of Britain's trade, combined with almost continuous war, created the need for a postal service and in 1689, Falmouth was chosen as the base for the Post Office.
Journey back in time and relive the heyday of Falmouth in our Cornwall galleries. Discover the history of the Packet ships - the post office carriers of yesteryear, experience the conditions on board and appreciate the good living Packet Captains made by looking at the handsome houses out of our 29m tower windows.
