Wanted: Stewards for Funchal 500 Tall ships Regatta
In September 2008 the port of Falmouth will host the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta, which will involve some of the world's major Class A vessels and also a number of smaller ships. A total of around 20 vessels are expected to be involved.
With a programme of events covering four days there will be an exciting mix of onboard visits to Tall Ships, maritime exhibitions, entertainment, local produce and craft markets, bars, street theatre, live music, ships crew parade, a firework display and parade of sail before the Tall Ships head off to Portugal on the first leg of their race.
Cornwall Centre for Volunteers is involved with recruiting volunteers for the event.
Here are some questions that you may have and their answers:
What does the stewarding involve?
We have two main opportunities available; stewarding in the Docks or Marina and Car Park Stewards. Both opportunities involve being outdoors and require communication skills and an interest in the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta.
We will have two briefing sessions which you will need to attend; these are on Saturday 26th July at 10am and Friday 29th August at 6pm in Falmouth. At these sessions you will receive information about the event, the opportunities available and be able to meet the other stewards.
Docks and Marina Stewards
The largest class of Tall Ships, the Class A vessels, will be berthed in Falmouth Docks and the smaller vessels in Port Pendennis Marina, allowing the public to view the vessels up close. We need volunteers who can steward the public safely through the Docks and who have a friendly and helpful manner to ensure that the public get the most out of their visit.
Car Park Stewards
We are looking for enthusiastic people who can coordinate the coach park and disabled car park facilities. This will involve directing drivers into car park spaces to make best use of the space available. You'll also be on hand to answer any questions about the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta event.
What is the commitment?
There are two briefing sessions which will equip you with the information that you need, so you will need to attend both briefing sessions on Saturday 26th July at 10am and Friday 29th August at 6pm in Falmouth.
Shifts are mainly on Wednesday 10th, Thursday 11th and Friday 12th September. Each shift will be a few hours long. If you are available for more than one shift then this will be of benefit to you as it will allow you to become more familiar with the event. Assistance with travelling expenses and nationally recognised training in Event Management related areas is available, subject to funding criteria.
What are the perks?
Being part of Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta is a huge perk in itself. By helping people to enjoy the experience, you'll be playing a vital role in this maritime event. You'll get a briefing on the event and a T-Shirt. You may be eligible for training for a nationally recognised qualification in Event Management related areas. We are also offering our volunteers the chance to win a sailing experience by entering a prize draw.
Sounds great, how do I get involved?
To apply contact Emily Evans at the address given below, you'll then receive an application form and we'll arrange a time to meet you to discuss the opportunities; this will take place at your local volunteer centre. The Cornwall Centre for Volunteers has offices in Redruth, Bodmin, Truro, St Austell and Liskeard.
Is there any training available?
There are two briefing sessions for you to come to and find out more about the roles available, meet the other volunteers and find out more about this amazing event. These are on Saturday 26th July at 10am and Friday 29th August at 6pm in Falmouth, and you'll need to be available to come to both sessions.
There is training that leads to a nationally recognised qualification in Event Management related areas on offer, for which you may be eligible. This would be a definite asset to anyone considering working or volunteering in the event sector.
